What is Mindscaping?

Mindscaping is a tool for (re-)designing your innder landscape and your path through that landscape. Mindscaping was 'discovered' and developed by hynotherapist Mike Mandel. It is a process of accessing your unconscious mind and providing a simple, but incredibly powerful methodology for both personal insight and rapid change. Mindscaping had its genesis in aspects of Time Line Therapy, Ericksonian hypnosis, NLP submodality shifts, The Cube system of personality typing, and Junian symbolism and archetype theory.

What is Hypnosis?

On Wikipedia you will find the following definition from the The American Psychological Association:

"Hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion.[1]"

This definition is very accurate and covers what the experience of hypnosis is for both the subject being hypnotised and those observing this situation. However there is no "true" steadfast definition of hypnosis. The definition of hypnosis is a long debated thing in the community of hypnotists. We will give you a few below that we find to serve us well in understanding hypnosis and how it can help us.

One of the most famous and widely used definitions comes from Dave Elman (1900 – 1967) who wrote the book "Findings in Hypnosis" which was later titled "Hypnotherapy". Stuart often uses Elman's process of inducing a hypnotic trance both in sessions of hypnotherapy and for stage performances.

"Hypnosis is a state of mind in which the critical faculty of the human is

bypassed, and selective thinking established"

-Dave Elman

For the purposes of understanding hypnosis it is easier to look at it through the model of the human experience as a conscious and unconscious mind. In the case of Elman's quote the "critical faculty" is the barrier between the conscious and unconscious. By getting past this "consciousness" barrier the hypnotist is able to direct the part of the human subject's reality that is not functioning consciously.

When looking into working with a hypnotherapist it is good to take into consideration the background of the hypnosis professional you are working with. The two strongest modern influences (and mentors) of Stuart Gehring are Mike Mandel of the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy (http://mikemandelhypnosis.com/) and Anthony Jacquin of the United Kingdom Hypnotherapy Training College (http://www.ukhypnotherapytraining.co.uk/)

For the conscious/unconscious model of the human experience Anthony Jacquin in his book "Reality is Plastic" has a very succinct definition that serves us well.

"Hypnosis is the art of presenting ideas directly to the receptive unconscious

mind."

-Anthony Jacquin

Another solid definition of hypnosis, (and Stuart's Favourite) also comes from Anthony Jacquin:

"Hypnosis is a social construct that causes the cognitive processes of automatic imagination. (A subjects) Hypnotic response is defined by the subjective sensation of automaticity or involuntariness as they lack the knowledge or feeling of intention."

-Anthony Jacquin

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a process during which a person uses the model of hypnosis to make changes for a better life and reality.
